The Joy of the Lord

John 15:11 ‘These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.’

Those that love righteousness find their deepest delight in God. Our Lord Jesus hates wickedness and loves righteousness, therefore the Father anoints Him with the oil of gladness. In the volume of the book it is written of the Son that He delights to do the Father’s will. It was His meat to please the Father.

This same joy of our Lord Jesus belongs to those who do His will. He always did those things that pleased the Father, walking in the light His countenance, so that the Father could say with utmost pleasure, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ So our Lord is well pleased with all who walk in righteousness. Psalm 11:7 ‘For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.’

The Christian’s joy is a deep and holy joy. Yes, he will certainly be grieved by the wickedness of sin, even as Christ was. But the necessary heaviness of the present only answers to the saint’s pure delight in Christ and His righteousness.

May we not be found among the number of carnal Christians who have too much of the love of the world in their hearts to enjoy His work, or the fellowship of the saints, or the ministry of the Word in the sanctuary. To them, these are sad chores that must be endured. It is true that:

Solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion’s children know.

…But do all of Zion’s children know the treasure that they have? We will be partakers of our Lord’s own joy only as we abide in Him.
